Nia Adé
Born in Charleston, SC, colored and shaped by numerous moves across states, Nia Adé began her dance training at the age of five at Walltown Children’s Theatre in Durham, North Carolina under the direction of Cynthia Penn-Halal. After moving to Charlotte in 2017, she joined Baran Dance Company as an apprentice and trained with the company for five years. She has attended and studied dance at Central Piedmont Community College as well as The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. During her time in Charlotte she participated in various arts festivals in the NC area including the North Carolina Dance Festival and the “Points in Space” Conference at Black Mountain College. She has also performed in two NC Choreographer Residency Projects. Currently based in Atlanta, GA, with an undying interest and love for somatics, choreographic processes and the exploration of the many facets and realms in which dance exists and changes form, Nia remains dedicated to the ongoing task of unveiling both societal and personal truths through movement investigation and inquiry.
I’M INSPIRED BY emotion and sensation. The humanness and universal nature of those two things is something that I find truly beautiful. Everyone feels, everyone senses. They become my driving force when I am dancing. A gateway or portal into a field of existence much lighter than our physical reality. Dance transcends.
I FIND PURPOSE IN translating the meaning and discovering the significance of movement alongside other dance artists. That moment when learning a new movement sequence or witnessing movement in performance. It could be something so small that completely changes or shifts something internally, and makes you feel deeply. It is a physical and visual realization that sparks so much excitement. My favorite part of this is discussing the differences and intersections of how those realizations, those moments are experienced by those sharing space with you.
WHAT MAKES ME COME ALIVE engaging in movement out in nature. I love observing how everything is always rippling out of eachother, and letting my body respond in tandem.
